Questions about veneers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about veneers. Remember always to consult with your dentist before having any treatment done to your teeth. And for any questions we haven't answered here, please don't hesitate to give us a call.

Q1  What are veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells of, for example porcelain or ceramic owhich are essentially glued to the surface of teeth. Veneers have become popular as a cosmetic denistry tool to dramatically improve the appearance of a person's smile. They are frequently used for people with damaged, stained or crooked teeth. However, we strongly recommend all patients to consider all the options available including braces and teeth whitening before opting for comprehensive veneer treatment.

Q2  How long do dental veneers last for?

It depends on the type of veneers used. If they are carefully looked after they can last up to 20 years or longer although 10 years is perhaps more realistic. Good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist can help them last as long as possible; but remember that at some point they will need to be replaced. If a veneer falls off it is important that you see your dentist immediately.

Q3  Does it hurt to have veneers done?

Veneer preparation shouldn't get anywhere near the underlying nerve and is therefore usually painless. However some patients do experience sensitivity to hot and cold for a period afterwards.

Q4  How long does it take to have veneers fitted?

It usually requires a minimum of two visits to have veneers fitted. To start with we provide all patient with a full examination and consultation to ensure they are opting for the best possible treatment. The surface of your teeth will then need to be prepared to accommodate the veneers which means shaving off as small an area as possible - equal to the thickness of the veneer. Your dentist will then take an impression of your teeth which a dental technician will need to create perfect fitting veneers. At 360 Dental Care we would then fit your teeth with a set of temporary veneers while the permanent ones are being made. This will usually take a week or two. On your second appointment we will then give your teeth a very thorough clean before fitting the permanent veneers with strong 'cement'.
