So, a new dance move seems to have gotten everyone flossing, but if they spent more time cleaning in between their teeth then we certainly would have less dental problems to deal with.
When you come along to see us for a dental examination or a hygiene visit, we always ask you what you are using to clean interproximally, this is because it is super important.
What many people do not realize is that interdental cleaning is just as important as tooth brushing. A toothbrush cleans the tops and outer surfaces of the tooth and gums but interdental cleaning, cleans the tight spaces in between the teeth and the gaps between the base of the teeth and the gums.
A lot of people think that because they brush their teeth twice a day that is enough, but your mistaken, whilst brushing your teeth twice daily goes a long way towards maintaining oral health for the best possible result you need to clean interdentally using something such as floss, an interdental brush or tepe.
Some people think using a mouth wash is just as good as interdental cleaning, but this is not the case – whilst a mouthwash can kill the bacteria that forms plaque, it can not remove the stubborn tartar and bits of food that can lodge in-between teeth.
Plaque or tartar takes around 24 hours to harden, by brushing your teeth twice daily and cleaning interdentally you are reducing the risk of a buildup that can lead to gum disease and decay.
