FAQ’s

What are dental implants and how do they work?

A dental implant is a titanium or zirconia screw that’s placed directly into your jawbone, replacing your missing tooth root.

Once placed, the bone gradually fuses with the implant, creating a strong and stable foundation. A custom-made crown or bridge is then attached to the implant, restoring the appearance and function of the missing tooth or teeth.

Which dental implants do we use?

We use Prama Dental implants made by Sweden&Martina.

There are hundreds of different dental implants systems, however, we have chosen Prama because we believe it is one of the best implants on the market for the following reasons:

  1. The neck of the implant is designed to encourage the gum to attach to it. This attachment helps protect the bone. Studies show this reduces the incidence of peri-implantitis (which is like gum disease around implants and can lead to them failing). Peri-implantitis is one of the most common causes of implant failure.

  1. The implants are made from grade 5 titanium. Grade 5 titanium is already used in the medical field because it is considered to be biocompatible.

  1. Prama dental implants are certified as “CLEAN” by the Independant Clean Dental Implant Foundation. This gives us peace of mind as we know the implant surface is not contaminated. It is thought that surface contamination can lead to implant failure. Not all dental implants are “CLEAN” certified. More information on this can be found at Clean Implant Foundation

Are dental implants painful?

The dental implant procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia so that you won’t feel any pain during the surgery.

After the procedure, there may be some discomfort and swelling, but this can be managed with pain relief medication
Most patients have minimal pain during the recovery period.

What is the success rate of dental implant surgery?

Dental implants have a high success rate, with studies showing success rates of over 95%.

The success of the procedure depends on various factors. For example, oral health issues, such as gum disease or bone loss may affect the success of dental implant treatment.

It’s important to address these issues before undergoing implant surgery to ensure the best possible outcome. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices are crucial for maintaining oral health and the success of dental implants.

Our dentists will discuss any risk factors which apply specifically to you at the consultation.

How long does the dental implant process take?

The process can take between 3-4 months months to complete.

This includes the initial consultation and planning, the surgical placement of the implant, the healing period (osseointegration), and the placement of the final restoration.

The exact timeline can vary depending on individual factors and any additional procedures required.

What are the benefits of dental implants compared to other tooth replacement options?

Dental implants offer several advantages over other tooth replacement options, such as dentures or bridges. Some benefits include:

  • Improved appearance and confidence
  • Enhanced speech and ability to eat comfortably
  • Preservation of jawbone structure
  • Long-term durability and stability
  • No need to alter adjacent healthy teeth
