Your gums are an integral support for your teeth.

Keeping them healthy and disease-free involves regular dental hygienist visits to have biofilm like plaque and tartar removed.

Here at 360 Dental Care, we can provide this essential professional clean of your teeth and offer ongoing advice on how to look after your gums as you move through different stages of your life.

So, what are the benefits of dental hygienist visits?

FAQ

How often should you see a dental hygienist?

We recommend coming in to see us every 6 months. However, some patients may need to come in more or less frequently depending on their lifestyle and the condition of their gums upon their last appointment with us.

What’s the difference between the hygienist and the dentist?

A hygienist is concerned with issues which affect the soft tissues in your mouth, most specifically your gums. They are experienced in spotting signs of gum disease such as gum recession, bleeding gums, interdental staining and biofilm, and bite problems pertaining to gum disease. Meanwhile, your dentist is involved with caring for your dental health (a little like a GP for your teeth).

Does a hygienist remove stains?

Hygienists can remove plaque and tartar which will undoubtedly improve the appearance of your teeth. However, this will not alter the fundamental shade of your teeth. If you wish to lighten your overall tooth shade, we recommend teeth whitening treatment.

What if my hygienist tells me I have gum disease?

Your hygienist may refer you to our periodontal specialist if they believe you are suffering with gum disease. Our specialist periodontist will be able to assess the extent of the damage by examining your gum tissue and condition of your jawbone using state-of-the-art CBCT scanning software and probes.
