FAQ

What happens at a gum health check-up?

During a specialist periodontal check-up, your periodontist will check for signs of gum disease such as:

  • Changes to the way your teeth bite together.
  • Bright red/swollen gums.
  • Halitosis and pus in between teeth.
  • Changes to the way partial dentures sit in your mouth.
  • Bleeding when dental floss is used.
  • Implant gum disease (peri-implantitis).

Your periodontist may need to take X-rays and photographs of your teeth to diagnose how much gum disease has progressed. This information will inform the approach we have to treating your symptoms.

What is the most effective periodontitis treatment?

There is a range of treatments to stabilise and treat gum disease such as:
– Gum grafting.
– Periodontal laser treatment.
– Crown lengthening surgery.
– Tooth replacement treatment.
– Scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar under the gum line.

Will the treatment be painful?

We use sophisticated techniques and equipment to minimise discomfort during your treatment. Rest assured, we will not go ahead with treatment until you feel relaxed and comfortable with your surroundings. This may involve the use of IV sedation to help reduce your nerves whilst you are in the dentist’s chair.

How many visits will I need?

This largely depends on your condition and whether or not a multidisciplinary approach is needed. Your periodontist will be able to let you know how many times to come in and see us once a full diagnosis has been made.
